Established by the United Nations in 1954, World Children's Day is marked on November 20 each year to promote international togetherness, raise awareness of child-related issues worldwide, and improve child welfare.

The UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child on November 20, 1959, and then 30 years later it adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child on that same day. The 42 rights of a child listed in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child is the most widely ratified convention in history.

The convention sets out the rights of children, aged zero to 18 years, and the responsibilities of governments to ensure those rights. They apply equally to every child, regardless of ethnicity, gender or religion.
