Zhao Yulan joined the Children's League at 10. “I did not know exactly what the league was for. I was only aware that I had to carry messages for grown-ups,” says Zhao.

At that time, regulations required that Zhao had to keep her identification as a league member secret, so that none of her family, not even her parents, knew what was she doing.

Later Zhao became a member of the underground. In order to avoid being discovered by Japanese soldiers, Zhao and her colleagues usually met at midnight. Zhao lied to her husband that she was going to visit neighbors so that she could get out without being questioned. Her husband often complained about her absences.
