BEIJING, Dec. 19 -- The People's Daily, the flagship newspaper of the Communist Party of China, is to run an editorial Saturday, on the "one country, two systems" policy behind economic and social development of Macao over the past 15 years.
On the 15th anniversary of the return of Macao, a former Portuguese enclave, to China, the newspaper reviews the policy, the Basic Law and cooperation between Macao and the mainland.
"The successful implementation of the 'one country, two systems' policy in Macao in the past 15 years shows that the principles of 'one country, two systems' and 'Macao people governing Macao' with a high degree of autonomy are totally correct," it says.
The newspaper says Macao has governed itself well, and the mainland will remain a staunch supporter of Macao, assisting its development.
To maintain Macao's long-term prosperity and stability, the "one country, two systems" policy must remain, the Basic Law be strictly adhered to, and attention be concentrated on development, the quality of people's lives, democracy, inclusiveness, mutual support and harmony, it says.
With the mainland in support Macao has a brighter future and will contribute to the realization of the Chinese dream of the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, the editorial says.
