China’s Ministry of Defense said Thursday its aircraft carriers are mainly for onshore support facilities.
Spokesman Yang Yujun made the statement during a routine press briefing in response to a question about the nearly completed second carrier base in Hainan.
The onshore support facilities includes docking ports for the aircraft carriers, airports, training facilities and so on.
He added that the construction of those facilities are determined according to the task required.
According to Global Times, the basic construction of China's second People's Liberation Army Navy aircraft carrier base on Hainan was completed in November 2014.
The base incorporates a pier which can dock large ships on both sides, suggesting that two carriers can dock at the PLA Navy's carrier bases at the same time.
