Permanent residents or eligible voters in several regions in Beijing, such as Dongcheng, Haidian and Miyun, are likely to be elected as the people's jurors in 5 designated courts in the near future. The people's jury program will be run on a trial basis.
Those selected will be involved in lawsuits in the designated courts.
The selection of the people's jury will be done by random drawings.
The reforms on choosing the people's injury have widened the selection scope, raised the eligible age from 23 to 28 and lowered the educational requirement from above junior college to above high school graduation.
However, such criteria are not applicable, if the jurors are revered community members in rural or remote areas.
The reforms are aimed at incorporating public values into the legal system. For instance, jurors can express their own opinions on whether detailed information involved in a legal case can be regarded as a fact or not.
