On what is likely to be the most unforgettable first day of school, some 300 students had no classroom to attend as their building had been let out with plans to convert it into a hotel.
Bazhou No.7 Elementary School in Bazhong city, Sichuan province admitted that it had signed a lease agreement with a hotel next door some years ago. Accordingly, the 600 square meter building will be used as a hotel for 15 years.
Students from the fifth grade had to read their books on the playground while waiting for classes to commence.
The school said it had rented another building and would start classes the next day, though parents fear the newly-renovated rooms may pose health risks to the children.
