China's Supreme People's Court has reviewed the Fudan poisoning case in which a student Lin Senhao was sentenced to death for murdering his roommate. The Supereme Court made the final verdict on Wednesday, upholding Lin's death sentence.
Lin Senhao, a medical student at the prestigious Fudan University in Shanghai, is believed to have dropped a deadly chemical into a water dispenser in the dormitory .
His roommate, Huang Yang, drank from the dispenser on April 1, 2013 and finally died of organ failure days later, leaving all the doctors' efforts to save him in vain.
Lin was first sentenced to death by Shanghai No.2 Intermediate People's Court in February 2014 for what it determined as an intentional homicide.
Lin appealed, insisting that the poison was intended as an April Fools' joke.
The second trial focused on Lin's intention behind contaminating the water and whether the poison was N-Nitrosodimethylamine.
In December last year, the second trial of the case upheld the death sentence against Lin. The Supreme People's Court started to review the case in May this year.
In the petitions, Xie Tongxiang, Lin's new lawyer, cited legal medical experts as saying that Huang died of acute liver diseases, rather than poisoning.
However, after reviewing the case, the Supreme People's Court agreed with Shanghai Higher People's Court in upholding a death sentence to Lin.
The case has drawn wide public attention and prompted questions about the moral quality and education of Chinese youth.
