The embroidery of the Yi nationality has a long history, which is extensive and profound. It is not only a very important part of Chinese traditional ethnic and folk handicraft but also a very integral part of the Yi’s culture.
The embroidery done by the Yi includes clothing, shoes, turbans, loincloths, vests, purses, pillows, satchels and different kinds of accessories. They are made by unique techniques, exquisitely made, colorful, and of profound meanings. They have very high practical value, ornamental value, and collection value.
Legend goes among the Yi people that “a mountain without trees is not considered a mountain; girls who cannot embroider flowers are not considered they are Yi girls.” The embroidery of the Yi people can date back to the time prior to the Three Kingdoms.
