The ice-making workshop on Jungong Road is a major ice provider for Shanghai. In order to guarantee the freshness of vegetables and seafood, this workshop produces over 300 tons of ice everyday.
The ice-making machines at the workshop have been running for over 30 years, still working like a charm. In the workshop, the temperature under the ground is only -10 Celsius degree; while the temperature above is over 38 Celsius degree due to the insulating layer.
Working at the ice-making workshop is no piece of cake. When transferring the ice (125 kolograms each)from the workshop to the container car, workers have to make it done within 20 minutes, otherwise, the ice would stick to the ground or melt. Over 20 workers take three shifts in turns to make sure the city get ice 24/7.
