It was a great year for Chinese filmmakers. "In the Mood for Love" by Wong Kar-Wai won the Technical Grand Prize for Christopher Doyle, Lee Ping-bing, and William Chang, and the Best Actor Prize for Tony Leung. At the same time, "Devils on the Door Step" by Jiang Wen won the Grand Jury Prize; "Yi Yi" by Edward Yang won the Best Director Prize.
2001
Hou Hsiao-Hsien's "Millennium Mambo" won the Technical Grand Prize in Cannes.
2002
Jia Zhangke's "Unknown Pleasures" entered competition at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. "Bus 44," written and directed by Chinese-American filmmaker Dayyan Eng, was the first Chinese short film invited to the Directors' Fortnight section. "Cry Woman" by Liu Bingjian and "Double Vision" by Chen Kuo-fu were also included in the Un Certain Regard section at the festival.
